Have you ever come across this handpan scale before?

To the best of my knowledge, this note layout has never before been adapted into a handpan scale.

This instrument was developed in collaboration with my friend Debbie from @ThatHandpanLady. If you enjoy her playing, you can also find her on YouTube at @ThatHandpanLady4510.

Debbie originally approached me with a unique collection of notes she'd been playing on the piano, wondering how they might translate to a handpan and what they might sound like.

Those notes became the foundation for this scale. From there, I developed the layout and adapted them into a playable handpan.

Since the idea for the scale started with Debbie, it only felt right that she should name it: Alla Deriva 😊

Built on one of our newer Axiom 1.2mm deep-drawn 441 stainless shells. I've been really happy with this material. Excellent sustain, great dynamic range, and incredible stability.

One of the things I find most interesting about the Apex design is that the same note can produce two very different voices depending on how it is activated.

Playing from the dimple distributes the energy of the strike more evenly across the membrane, creating a warmer, softer response.

Playing from the membrane itself brings out a more familiar handpan character and articulation.

This shell was hand-shaped in 2019 and remained unfinished while I worked through the lessons that batch had to teach.
